    An elephant has bashed a boy to death at the Bangladesh National Zoo in Mirpur. The incident occurred around 10:30am on Eid day on Thursday. The boy was the son of an elephant handler, said Jashim Uddin Molla, deputy commissioner of the Mirpur Division of police. “Many people were visiting the zoo as part of their Eid celebrations,” he said. “The boy was with his father, the elephant handler, as they [the elephants] were showing off tricks like playing football.”   “Suddenly, one of the elephants picked up the boy with its trunk and slammed him to the ground.” The boy was rushed to the hospital, where a doctor on duty declared him dead, the police official said. The elephant has since been separated and kept under special scrutiny. The zoo administration has yet to issue a statement on the incident.  

  At least five people were killed at Sadarghat Launch Terminal after the anchor chain of a passenger launch severed and hit them around 3:00pm today, Joynul Abedin, director of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA), told The Daily Star. The accident happened when passenger launch Farhan struck another vessel named Tasrif while attempting to anchor alongside the latter in the terminal. On impact, the anchor chain of Tasrif broke into pieces and hit some of the people around, injuring them. Five of them later died, he added.  

    SANTA RITA, Guam — Three mariners are safe on April 9, 2024, thanks to the coordination of U.S. Coast Guard Forces Micronesia/Sector Guam and the U.S. Navy, after being stranded on Pikelot Atoll, Yap State, Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), for more than a week.  Responders successfully located the three mariners on Pikelot Atoll on the evening of April 9 and returned them and their outboard 100 nautical miles to Polowat Atoll, Chuuk State.         The man, who wished to remain anonymous, said he had just arrived home from work when he heard screams for help inside his apartment complex on Red Hill Terrace in Doncaster East about 7.50pm. "I heard a little kid crying and I (went outside) there was blood everywhere, it was on the carpet, on the walls, on my door," he said. Police believe three men had falsely claimed to be police to gain access to the complex before the trio pushed their way into a property.
